In Warsaw, the X3 xDrive20i is chosen by people who live or work where the tarmac ends. New estates in Białołęka or Wawer often still have temporary gravel access roads, and plots near Serock and Nieporęt turn soft after rain. In the city itself it is a comfortable mid-size SUV, with a high driving position and a good view in traffic on Modlińska or the Toruńska route. Both are large automatics for longer trips, but the X3 has all-wheel drive and a taller body, while the Mercedes E220 CDI is a low, rear-wheel-drive saloon. The Mazda 5 carries seven, has sliding doors on both sides and compact-car dimensions, but a manual gearbox and a 115 hp engine that needs revs with a full load. The BMW X3 xDrive20i has five seats, an automatic, all-wheel drive and a 550 l boot, so with five on board it takes more luggage than the Mazda (426 l). For six or seven people choose the Mazda; for five with luggage and winter roads, the X3.

2.0 diesel, 184 PS (190 PS from 2014), 380–400 Nm, xDrive
The 20d is the diesel version with the same power as our 20i. It uses less fuel on the road and has more torque, while our petrol 20i is quieter and smoother in town. Both have xDrive and a 550 l boot, so for a winter trip to the mountains they do the same job.

3.0 I6 diesel, 258 PS, 560 Nm, xDrive, automatic
The 30d is a six-cylinder diesel with plenty of power in reserve, good for towing and fast motorway driving. Our xDrive20i has 184 PS, so it is calmer, but it has the same xDrive, body and boot. For a trip to the mountains or a gravel track to a country plot it is all you need.
BMW X3 xDrive35i (F25) or BMW X3 xDrive20i?
3.0 turbo I6 petrol, 306 PS, 400 Nm, xDrive, automatic
The 35i is the most powerful petrol X3 of this generation, with a turbocharged six-cylinder. Our 20i has four cylinders and 184 PS, so it is clearly slower but less demanding to run. If you want an all-wheel-drive X3 for winter and poorer roads, our xDrive20i does the job.
BMW X3 xDrive28i (F25) or BMW X3 xDrive20i?
until 2012 a naturally aspirated 3.0 I6 with 258 PS, then a 2.0 turbo with 245 PS, xDrive
The 28i is an interesting case, because the same name covered two engines. Until 2012 it was a naturally aspirated 3.0 six-cylinder, then a two-litre turbo from the same family as our 20i, just more powerful. Our xDrive20i has that four-cylinder engine in its 184 PS form and the same drive system.
